The Sherwood Airgunners Club of Steubenville Ohio was unofficially formed by accident in 2015 by a few of the remaining archers of the near bankrupt Sherwood Archery club! Membership had been on the decline for years and the Indoor range was getting very little use. Most of the members that were left were up in age and it was becoming hard for them to draw and shoot their bows due to various age related ailments so they thought why don’t we get some pellet guns and shoot them in the Indoor range this winter for something to pass the time.

Three of the members purchased some cheap break barrel air rifles from the various “big Box” stores and they began to meet there three times a week for some causal shooting competition amongst themselves and soon the group grew to 15 or so regular shooters ! Soon the competition got the best of them and their equipment became better and better after they found out about Pyramyd Air being only an hour or so north of them! None of them ever thought that they would have gotten this serious about airguns but they were hooked !! Then one day one of the members showed up with a brand new PCP rifle from Pyramyd and when the members saw how accurate it was it started a buying spree that would have NEVER been thought of just a year or so before. Soon they had two classes of competitors some with PCP’s and others that stuck with their spring powered rifles. Everyone was having a good time shooting out candles and making up different types of competitions and even a few friendly wagers from time to time were contested!! All in fun of course!!

Then in 2017 along came a new member to the group that wanted to take the group to a higher level of competitive shooting thus the club became a member club of the USARB (The United States Air Rifle Benchrest Association and began having actual sanctioned shoots in the winter open to the public. Then the following summer a few of the members decided that we needed to have “Field Target” shoots in the summer as they had been attending field Target shoots at North East Ohio air gun club N.O.A. in Chagrin Falls Ohio ( we like to call them our sister club) as we have tried to model what they do because of their success in running a great tournament so a “Field Target” course was cut out of the wooded acreage at Sherwood and we began to hold shoots in 2020.
